The 8" x 1-1/2" 180 Grit Lapidary Diamond Hard Flat Grinding Wheel is a heavy-duty intermediate shaping and smoothing wheel engineered for standard 8-inch vertical cabbing units and bench grinding machinery. Built with a solid precision-turned steel hub electroplated with high-density 180-grit monocrystalline diamonds, this hard wheel delivers true-running performance and rapid stock removal without rim flex. It quickly eliminates 80- and 100-grit scratch patterns while preserving crisp outlines and uniform girdle dimensions across agate, jasper, quartz, jade, ceramic, and art glass.

Key Features

  • Precision Steel Core Construction: Rigid, balanced steel core eliminates runout, providing absolute rim flatness and vibration-free rotation at 1400–1800 RPM.
  • Heavy-Duty Electroplated Diamond Bond: Premium 180-grit diamond particles are nickel-bonded securely to the cylindrical face, ensuring high cutting aggression and resistance to diamond stripping.
  • Intermediate Stock Removal & Shaping: Bridges coarse rough grinding and fine pre-polishing, quickly removing 80/100-grit scratches while holding strict dimensional tolerances.
  • True Flat Profile: Delivers sharp 90-degree corners and flat, uniform grinds on slabs, preforms, and cabochon girdles.
  • Standard 1" Arbor with Reducer Bushings: Bored to 1" and supplied with precision bushing spacers to adapt seamlessly to 3/4", 5/8", and 1/2" machine arbors.

Applications

  • Gemstone Cabbing & Preforming: Smoothing cabochon dome contours and calibrating girdle thickness on agate, jasper, quartz, petrified wood, and jade.
  • Glass Cold Working & Beveling: Truing saw cuts, edge beveling, and shaping cold-worked art glass components.
  • Ceramic & Mineral Sizing: Grinding specimen backs, fossil slabs, and dense technical ceramics flat and true.

Technical Specifications

  • Diameter: 8 inches (200 mm)
  • Width: 1-1/2 inches (38 mm)
  • Grit: 180 Grit (Medium Shaping)
  • Core Material: Solid Steel
  • Bond Type: Electroplated Diamond
  • Arbor Size: 1 inch (includes 3/4", 5/8", 1/2" reducer bushings)
  • Recommended Operating Speed: 1400–1800 RPM

Operating Guidelines

  • Always operate with adequate continuous water coolant to keep the workpiece cool and flush swarf from the diamond surface.
  • Apply light to moderate, uniform hand pressure; let the diamond cut freely without forcing the workpiece against the steel core.
  • Avoid grinding on the corner edges to prevent premature diamond stripping along the rim shoulder.
