The 8" x 1-1/2" 180 Grit Sintered Diamond Grinding Wheel (Metal Bonded) is a heavy-duty lapidary smoothing wheel engineered for standard 8-inch vertical cabbing units, commercial gemstone production, and industrial glass cold working. Manufactured with a 5mm deep continuous sintered diamond matrix bonded in a resilient bronze alloy, this wheel bridges primary rough shaping with fine pre-polishing. It rapidly eliminates 80- and 100-grit scratch patterns while preserving delicate stone outlines and uniform girdle dimensions on agates, jaspers, quartz, jade, and art glass.
Key Features
- Continuous 5mm Solid Sintered Matrix: Medium 180-grit monocrystalline diamond abrasive is integrated completely through a 5mm bronze metal bond, ensuring decades of continuous service without diamond peeling or edge loss.
- Controlled Scratch Reduction: Perfectly balanced between rapid stock removal and refined smoothing, smoothing out coarse gouges and establishing smooth cabochon surfaces.
- Self-Sharpening Cutting Action: Controlled erosion of the metal binder steadily introduces fresh, sharp diamond facets, maintaining uniform cutting speed across its working life.
- Precision-Balanced Steel Hub: High-precision turned core delivers true, vibration-free rotation at 1400–1800 RPM, protecting arbor bearings and ensuring clean grinding control.
- Standard 1" Arbor with Reducer Bushings: Includes precision bushing adapters to fit 3/4", 5/8", and 1/2" machine arbors seamlessly.
Applications
- Intermediate Cabochon Smoothing: Removing 80/100-grit grind marks and refining dome contours on agate, jasper, quartz, jade, and petrified wood.
- Glass Cold Working & Beveling: Truing sawed glass borders, edge beveling, and smoothing cold-worked art glass components.
- Specimen Back Finishing: Smoothing flat display slabs, geode cross-sections, and fossil specimens prior to final resin sanding.
Technical Specifications
- Diameter: 8 inches (200 mm)
- Width: 1-1/2 inches (38 mm)
- Grit: 180 Grit (Medium Smoothing)
- Diamond Layer Depth: 5 mm
- Arbor Size: 1 inch (includes 3/4", 5/8", 1/2" reducer bushings)
- Bond Type: Sintered Metal (Bronze Matrix)
- Recommended Operating Speed: 1400–1800 RPM
Operating Guidelines
- Always operate with continuous, generous flood water lubrication to keep temperatures low and flush mineral swarf.
- Apply light to moderate contact pressure; allowing the diamond to grind naturally preserves the wheel profile and extends tool longevity.
- If cutting speed slows due to stone glaze or loading, run an abrasive dressing stick against the face with water to reveal fresh diamond crystals.
