The 8" x 1-1/2" Diamond Steel Hub Flat Grinding Wheel is a heavy-duty, precision-engineered flat face grinding wheel designed for high-efficiency stock removal, cabochon pre-forming, and edge truing across hard gemstones, mineral slabs, and studio glass. Manufactured with a seamless, solid steel hub electroplated with high-density monocrystalline diamond abrasives, this 8-inch flat wheel provides exceptional rotational inertia, superior rigidity, and true running without vibration or arbor flex on standard 1-inch arbor lapidary grinding machines.
Key Features
- Solid Precision-Machined Steel Core: Heavy steel construction ensures maximum stability, zero deflection, and true-running balance even under heavy hand pressure.
- Planar Flat Working Face: 1-1/2" wide flat abrasive face allows rapid leveling of slab edges, truing preforms, and consistent facet grinding.
- Expanded 8" Diameter: Provides higher surface feet per minute (SFPM) and a larger grinding surface than 6" wheels, accelerating material removal on hard minerals and large workpieces.
- Premium Electroplated Diamond: High-concentration industrial diamond plating ensures fast cutting speed, clean edge beveling, and extended tool life.
- Universal 1" Arbor with Reducer Bushings: Includes precision reducer bushings to fit 3/4", 5/8", and 1/2" standard lapidary machine shafts.
- Full Progressive Grit Range: Available from aggressive 60 grit for fast roughing down to 600 grit for smooth, scratch-free pre-polish finishing.
Applications
- Lapidary & Cabbing: Rough pre-forming, girdle leveling, slab edge truing, and shaping on agate, jasper, jade, quartz, and petrified wood.
- Glass Cold Working: Beveling flat glass panels, leveling bottle bottoms, grinding punties, and finishing fused glass artworks.
- Ceramic & Porcelain Fabrication: Smoothing foot rings, correcting ceramic tiles, and planar grinding of fired stoneware.
Technical Specifications
- Diameter: 8 inches (203 mm)
- Width: 1-1/2 inches (38 mm)
- Arbor Size: 1 inch (includes 3/4", 5/8", 1/2" reducer bushings)
- Hub Material: Precision-Machined Seamless Solid Steel
- Surface Profile: Flat Face
- Bond Type: Precision Electroplated Diamond
- Available Grits: 60, 80, 100, 180, 220, 320, 600
- Recommended Operating Speed: 1400–1800 RPM
Operating Guidelines
- Always operate with adequate water coolant to wash away mineral swarf, keep workpieces cool, and prevent diamond thermal degradation.
- Apply light to moderate contact pressure; let the diamond matrix cut naturally without forcing the stone against the wheel.
- Rinse thoroughly after each grinding session and dry completely before storage to protect the steel body and diamond bond.
