The 8 in x 1/2 in Diamond Standard Faceting Lap is an expanded-diameter, high-precision lapidary tool engineered for gemstone cutting, facet pre-forming, and fine grinding. Manufactured with a rigid, precision-ground solid steel core electroplated with high-density industrial diamond particles, this 8-inch standard faceting lap delivers exceptional flatness, greater peripheral grinding speed, and aggressive yet controlled stock removal across extra-hard gem materials. Designed with a standard 1/2" center arbor hole, it runs true without flex or runout on standard 8-inch gemstone faceting machines.
Key Features
- Precision-Ground Solid Steel Core: Resists warping, dish-out, and deflection under facet pressure, providing an uncompromisingly planar reference surface for crisp meet-points and sharp facet junctions.
- Expanded 8" Working Surface: Provides greater usable surface area and higher peripheral cutting speeds than 6" laps, accelerating facet cutting on larger stones and high-volume runs.
- Uniform Electroplated Diamond Coating: High-concentration monocrystalline diamond grit provides consistent cutting action and extended lap service life.
- Complete Progressive Grit Range: Available from coarse 60 grit for fast roughing and pre-forming down to ultra-fine 3000 grit for scratch-free pre-polish facet alignment.
- Universal 1/2" Arbor: Precision center bore engineered for standard 8" faceting machines, flat lap grinders, and precision lapidary spindles.
- Versatile Hard Material Grinding: Exceptionally effective on hard gemstones including corundum (sapphire, ruby), topaz, beryl (emerald, aquamarine), quartz, spinel, and tourmaline.
Applications
- Gemstone Faceting: Rough pre-forming, pavilion facet cutting, crown facet placement, table cutting, and girdle shaping on precious and semi-precious stones.
- Precision Lapidary Lapping: Flattening cabochon backs, pre-polishing large mineral flats, and squaring gemstone preforms.
- Glass & Technical Ceramics: Edge beveling, chip repair, and planar leveling on optical glass blanks and structural ceramic components.
Technical Specifications
- Diameter: 8 inches (203 mm)
- Arbor Hole: 1/2 inch (12.7 mm)
- Abrasive Material: Premium Industrial Diamond
- Bond Type: Precision Electroplated Bond
- Base Plate: Solid Ground Steel Plate
- Available Grits: 60, 80, 120, 180, 220, 280, 360, 600, 1200, 3000
- Recommended Operating Speed: 350–1200 RPM
Operating Guidelines
- Always operate with continuous water drip or recirculating coolant to prevent heat buildup, stone thermal shock, and swarf loading.
- Apply light, even facet pressure; allow the sharp diamond matrix to cut freely without forcing the workpiece.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water after each grinding session and dry completely before storage to protect the steel base plate.
